[ Summary | Information ]

This article explains how to use SwyxIt! as a home user on Windows 2000 via Virtual Private Network (VPN).

  1. On your local (home user) machine create a user account with identical name and password as your company network account. Use this account when running SwyxIt!.
  2. The administrator needs to create an identical local user account on the SwyxServer machine (same name and password). This is required because the Microsoft DCOM authentication will not work otherwise. Note: this is not required with Windows XP clients. The domain login via VPN from XP clients has been improved by Microsoft. So if you don't like this, you will have to update your home user clients to Windows XP.
  3. You need to know the account information for the Internet Service Provider and the name or IP address of the VPN server.

Dial-up Network Connection to the Internet

For this you will need to configure a Dial-up network connection to the Internet. You will need administrator privileges for configuring the Dial-up network connection.

Creating a Dial-up connection to the Internet

  1. Open the Control Panel. From Network and Dial-up Connections click on Make New Connection.
  2. Choose Dial-up to the Internet and click on Next.
  3. The Internet Connection Wizard shows up.
  4. Choose I want to setup my Internet connection manually and click on Next.
  5. Choose I connect through a phone line and a modem and click on Next.
  6. Choose the ISDN device to be used for Dial-up and click on Next.
  7. Enter the phone number of the Internet Service Provider and click on Next.
  8. Enter the account name and password to be used for authentication with the Internet Service Provider and click on Next. You may prefer to enter the password manually each time you connect to the Internet.
  9. Give the connection a name like "Internet Dial-up" and proceed with Next.
  10. Choose to not create an Internet mail account and click on Next.
  11. Finish the last dialog by clicking on Finish.
  12. Create a shortcut to that Dial-up connection on the desktop

  9. Now you have two options:
    1. On tab Security unmark Automatically use my Windows logon name and password and on tab Options mark Prompt for name and password and Include Windows logon domain. In this case you will asked for the logon parameters when the connection is being established. This could be required when the network is using Active Directory.
    2. On tab Security mark Automatically use my Windows logon name and password. Your local windows account name and password will be used for connecting to the VPN. Hint: this might be a problem in some configurations because the local computer name is used as domain name then.
  10. On tab Networking select Internet Protocol and click on Properties. Click on Advance. In most cases the checkbox Use default gateway on remote network should be marked. If you would not mark this checkbox you would have to configure routing to the company network manually.
  11. Close the properties by clicking OK.

SwyxIt! Installation

After installing SwyxIt! it is recommended to remove SwyxIt! from the Startup folder. Usually you will connect to the VPN manually and launch SwyxIt! afterwards:

  1. Establish the Dial-up connection by clicking its icon on the desktop
  2. Establish the VPN connection by clicking its icon on the desktop
  3. Launch SwyxIt!. If you are prompted for the SwyxServer name, enter the name of the SwyxServer and click on OK. If the server cannot be found you may try several notations like server or If the name cannot be resolved, you may enter the IP address of the server. If you are not sure about name resolution try to ping the server from the command prompt.
  4. Configure SwyxIt! for using voice compression: Open the local settings (Settings\SwyxIt! Local Settings...) and change the Voice compression option to Always (Home Office).

You may consider to launch the Dial-up connections automatically after starting Windows (if you are e.g. using a DSL flat rate). For this you could configure a scheduled task with option At Logon and establish the Dial-up connection with a command line like c:\winnt\system32\rasphone.exe -d "My VPN Link".
